Series finale ends in 5-2 loss for Diamond 'Dogs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team dropped the series finale against the San Diego State Aztecs, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Aztecs took an early 3-0 lead after a three-run homer in the top of the first.

Starting pitcher Jake Riding held San Diego State to those three runs for five innings, striking out seven batters before hometown kid Victor Arreola took the mound in the bottom of the sixth.

An RBI single with a runner on third extended the Aztec lead to 4-0 over the Bulldogs.

Michael McKernan led off the eighth inning with a single to left field, followed by a Ben Newton walk and Eddie Saldivar single to load the bases without an out. Tommy Hopfe drove in a McKernan with a single to left field. Rocco Peppi braved a pitch inside that sent him to first and plated Newton to make it a 4-2 game.

San Diego State tallied an additional run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to left field and held the 5-2 lead through the conclusion of the game.

NOTES

The Bulldogs narrowly escaped their first shutout loss of the year, scoring their only runs in the eighth inning.

Despite the loss, Fresno State sits at the top of the Mountain West standings, now tied with New Mexico.

This is only the second series that Fresno State has dropped in 12 weeks of play.
